We are heading full-steam toward the summer months, so now is the time to check in with what is working and what is not, when it comes to your wellbeing. As the temperatures rise you may find your patience drops. BUT you can create a buffer between you and summer heat by strengthening your self-care practices. As a therapist, when I ask about self-care for the week, one of the most frequent answers I get is “sigh, well, I got a pedicure.” But I would like to encourage all of us to think deeper about self-care than an hour away from an otherwise stressful life.
Just as a full spectrum Yoga practice is an all-day, every-day thing (remember, the poses are only 1/8th of what yoga is all about), so is self-care. ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. Oy. This does not, however, mean that you must quit your job, stop your hobbies and drop the kids off at the neighbor’s. It means that when you do what you do, you engage with mindfulness and an awareness of whether this provides you with joy and energy.
To give you an example, let’s think of questions I may ask myself about my standard work day. Do I get enough sleep? Is my breakfast going to give me the energy and nutrition I need for the day? Looking at my schedule, am I focusing on the things that bring me closer toward my goals? Am I making deep connections with friends and family? Am I planning some time to take care of my body aka movement of some sort? Is there anything in my day that no longer serves me?
Of course this list could go on and on.
The point is that self-care is about setting healthy boundaries for ourselves, making space for nutrition and exercise, allowing for enough silent time as well as sleep, breathing deeply and most importantly, stepping outside of our comfort zone to encourage learning. What would a living and breathing, self-affirming self-care practice look like for you?
See you on the mat!
