The Ancient Art of Tai Chi

Mindful Movement for Vitality and Health

What is Tai Chi? - Health through alignment

Lu Bellmak "Inner Peace"

Take a moment and imagine what it would be like to experience absolute comfort in your body as you effortlessly move through space and time. You feel light as you deeply connect to the earth where you stand. Your bones are so aligned with the force of gravity that your muscles can soften, opening a rush of warmth throughout your body. As you continue to cultivate this feeling, all your worries wash away and are replaced with the blissfully empowered connection that is your birthright. Your breathing begins to deepen and you are renewed by your own life force. This is the art of Tai Chi.
Rooted in ancient China, Tai Chi has stood the tests of time in secrecy as a healing art, a martial art, and an insightful philosophy about how life creates life. We invite you to learn this art with Tai Chi Instructor Adam Montoya. Explore how to direct healing and transformational awareness through your body, mind and daily life.

Why Adam Montoya’s Tai Chi class has been important to me

"I have been attending Adam Montoya’s Tai Chi class for more than two years now and have found it to have been transformational in the healing of some deeply buried shoulder problems I have been dealing with, as well as with “performance nerves” issues I have as a violinist.
The reason is Adam’s philosophy of teaching, which involves an emphasis on the “meditations” directing one’s attention inside the body to first become aware of what is going on inside, and then subtly directing different areas to relax. This has a spiraling effect, in that the more you are able to relax the more aware you become, and the more aware you become, the more you are able to relax. Once Adam brings you to this state of relaxed awareness, he helps you to find a flow in the form through an understanding of how what is going on internally affects the movements you are making.
I cannot claim that my understanding is totally conscious, but my body seems to understand and that is what is important to me, since I have been able to transfer the resulting ease of motion to my violin playing.
Also, I have noticed that muscle tension in my neck and shoulders has eased so much that I am aware of areas around my shoulder blades that seemed totally immovable at the beginning are now much more flexible. One of the keys for me has been to continue the class over a long time and never give up, even when the road to understanding has not been completely smooth.  In any case, I never fail to feel relaxed and stress-free at the end of every class."

New Tai CHi Program

This style of tai chi is inspired by four main styles. These are Yang, Chen, Wu, and Hao style. Each style offers a different way of opening the body. After the last set of movements a set of yoga postures are used to further open the body by using Tai Chi principles to maintain balance and fluidity. Through this tai chi program you learn how to unify the mind, body and intent to improve your health and peace of mind.

Tai Chi has amazing healing benefits which include improved concentration, increased feelings of peace and enhanced mind-body connection. Our new step by step program will help you cultivate a greater sense of well being while you learn the proper techniques through foundational building practices.

In addition, tai chi improves balance, coordination, strength and flexibility through meditation, alignment, and movement. Meditation develops the keen awareness necessary to know how to improve posture. As posture improves through better alignment, movements become more relaxed, and balanced.

This tai chi program is introduced through six "all levels" workshops and two intermediate/advanced workshops. The all levels workshops teach exercises to help develop a specific skill, such as relaxation, or balance.

The intermediate/advanced workshops teach you a complete routine that combines everything that has been learned. The information for each level is taught in 2.5 or 3 hour workshops that are scheduled throughout the year. Students can supplement personal practice time with 1 on 1 lessons or arrange for group classes through Adam's tai chi meetup.

Helpful Guidelines for learning Tai Chi

Be curious about your mind and body connection- When a student wants to understand clearly how to use the body more efficiently, they start to open there mind to new concepts in using the mind to harmonize with body.

Have a willingness to learn Tai Chi theory- Tai Chi is a philosophy based on the natural laws which allow one to feel balanced. As you understand this more and more, you find endless possibilities for applying Tai Chi in daily life.

Practice Patience - The perspective of being willing to accept where you are, knowing that you will improve as you continue to practice is a key component to staying motivated.

Set time to practice - Finding just 10 - 20 minutes to practice twice a week or everyday is ideal. You can not really gain benefits if you don't practice. Make it a part of your day. A part of practice time is making sure you can attend classes or schedule private sessions.
